Online Texas License To Carry Course

Question: Is it legal to get Licensed to Carry in Texas, online?

Answer: YES! House Bill 3784, which went into effect on September 1, 2017, allows the Department of Public Safety to certify online course providers, only if the course providers meet eligibility requirements. The approved online course providers can offer the classroom instruction portion of the handgun proficiency requirement and administer the written exam.

Question: Do I still have to take the shooting portion at a range if I take the online course?

Answer: YES! After successfully passing the online course, students are required to attend 1 to 2 hours of range instruction class and demonstrate handgun proficiency with a Texas Qualified LTC Instructor. For more information on what to expect during those sessions, click on "what to expect" then "For Online LTC Courses".

BASICALLY... If you choose to take the Texas License to Carry course online, you have the luxury of completing the course at your pace and timing. You will have 6 months from the time you purchase the course to have it completed. After the 6 months, the registration code becomes invalid and no longer allows you access to the course.

You are required to take the shooting proficiency portion with a Texas DPS certified instructor and will be required to complete 1 to 2 hours of instruction before hitting the range.
